Lanzarote Beaches and Resorts

here are loads of great beaches on the holiday island of Lanzarote. Along with an abundance of places to stay that cover all budgets.

Lanzarote is home to around 100 beaches. One of which, Famara, was recently flagged up by the Daily Telegraph as the second best beach in the whole of Spain. Thanks to its dramatic sweeping bay which extends for around 8km.

Famara is located on the North West coast of Lanzarote which is quite wild and rugged. And as a result it is very popular with surfers. But the main resorts and the bulk of all tourist development is in fact located along the south eastern shoreline. And this is where the majority of visitors find themselves staying.

Here, there are thousands of Lanzarote villas, apartments and hotels for them to select from. And each of the three main resorts also boasts a good selection of beaches. Costa Teguise is home to Playa Cucharas and Playa Bastian. Two family friendly stretches of sand. Whilst the main resort of Puerto del Carmen boasts the aptly named Playa Grande at its heart. Playa Blanca in the south numbers three great beaches within the resort itself along with the superb sands at Papagayo nearby.

Despite the fact that the island is four hours away from the UK by plane flights to Lanzarote remain very reasonably priced. So it is easy to get out there and explore these great beaches. Car rental in Lanzarote is also very good value- as is petrol. Making it cheap to get around.

Such is the proliferation of beaches that even the islands capital city of Arrecife has a great playa right in the centre – the palm fringed Playa Reducto. Which is a great place to go and relax after a morning shopping in the city. As this is the commercial and business hub of the island.

Arrecife took on the mantle of capital city from Teguise in 1852 and boasts two historic castles. Which were built to protect the city from frequent pirate attacks during the 16th and 17th centuries. As buccaneers were drawn to the lucrative trade in slaves and Inca gold that passed through the port here en route from the Old World to the New.
Today the island relies heavily on tourism which account for about 60% of GDP. With the UK being Lanzarote´s largest tourist market place.
